Elva Viola (Drake) Copas Brinker

Tuneson Drake and his daughter, Elva Viola (Drake) Copas Brinker

This is Tuneson Drake, son of Silas Drake and Rowena Quackenbush; with his daughter, Elva Viola (Drake) Copas Brinker.

Tuneson died in 1947, so this picture must pre-date that.  It was probably taken in Ohio; as Tuneson lived his life around the Findlay, Hancock Co., Ohio area; his daughter moved to the Lodi, Medina Co., Ohio – West Salem, Wayne Co., Ohioa area after marrying John Wesley Brinker.

Elva was born 25 May 1893 in Findlay, Hancock Co., Ohio.  She died 6 May 1956 in Congress, Wayne Co., Ohio.

Elva was the daughter of Tuneson A. Drake and Yourena (aka Lurena) Brown.

Elva was married three times.

First she married Benjamin Elsworth Copas on 5 Sep 1908 in Hancock Co., Ohio. They later divorced.

Elva & Benjamin had 1 child: a son, Walter U.

Second she married John Wesley Brinker on 10 Apr 1912 in Hancock Co., Ohio.  Since John was a poor farmer from Ashland Co., Ohio, it is not none how he met the young divorcee from Findlay, Ohio.

Elva & John were raising her son Walter U. Copas from her first marriage.  Walter used the Brinker surname, although it is unknown if there was an “official” adoption and legal name change.

Elva married third Rice (aka Royce, aka Roy) Leroy Brinker on 18 Jun 1918 in Wayne Co., Ohio.

Elva & Roy had 7 children: Franklin Eugene (aka Gene), Clarence Tuneson Sr. (aka Tune), Ethel Ruth, Juanita Pearl, Viola Myrtle (aka Billie), Ralph Leroyce (aka Sam), and Harold Joseph Sr. (aka Yogi).

Since she lived near the Medina – Wayne Counties Line she has an obituary in each county’s newspaper.

The following is from the ‘Wooster Daily Record’ of Wooster, Wayne Co., Ohio; 7 May 1956; page 2:
Mrs. Elva Brinker, Congress Resident
“CONGRESS — Mrs. Elva Brinker, 62, died Sunday afternoon after a three-year illness.

“Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Matteson Funeral Home in West Salem.  The Rev. E.L. Thompson will officiate.  Burial will be in Hazzard Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday afternoon and evening.”

The following is from the “Medina County Gazette’ of Medina, Medina Co., Ohio; 11 May 1956; page 8:

John Wesley Brinker Falls – Dies A Week Later

John Brinker Death News Article

This newspaper clipping is undated but John Wesley Brinker died 11 Apr 1915 so this would be soon afterwards.

It is believed that it is from a Lodi, Medina Co., Ohio newspaper.  Although the phrase that he was buried “here”; if he was in fact buried in Hazzard Cemetery in West Salem, might mean it is from a West Salem, Wayne Co., Ohio newspaper.

It is believed that John Wesley Brinker was buried in an unmarked grave (due to limited funds) beside his parents in Hazzard Cemetery in West Salem, Wayne Co., Ohio.

Here is a transcription of the article:

FALL FATAL TO JOHN BRINKER
Drop of twenty-two feet from barn at Lodi is followed dy [sic] death
“Injuries received Tuesday of last week, when he fell 22 feet from a barn roof, proved fatal Sunday to John Brinker, of Lodi, formerly of West Salem.  The body was buried here Tuesday.
“Mr. Brinker was working on a barn being constructed along the W. & L. E. tracks and fell to the ground, workmen say alighting feet foremost.  It is thought in falling his head struck the building.
“He was carried to a nearby house and there attended to until evening when he was taken home.
“Not until Friday, when Dr. R. S. Hosler of West Salem, was called into the case, was the seriousness of Brinker’s injuries realized.
“Dr. Hosler found upon close examination, that the injuries were very serious and threatened to produce meningitis, which because of long time elapsing between the accident and the time the condition was found, might prove fatal.
“All possible medical attention was given but the efforts proved futile.
“Dr. Hosler found upon his arrival injuries sustained to Mr. Brinker’s head were such that the brain would undoubtedly be effected.  Besides cuts and bruises a severe injury was found on the back of the neck.
“Brinker had been delirious at several times on one occasion having left his bed and tied handkerchiefs around his ankles.
“The survivors beside the widow, are several small children.  The Brinker family, before moving to Lydi [sic], lived on the M. Keyser farm, in the house which burned down last winter while it was their home.”
